What is BOTOX?

Botox Swansea IL

BOTOX basically is the botulinum toxin type A. This is the neurotoxic protein produced by the clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that can cause botulism. On the surface, that sounds terrifying, but it’s not. Back in the 1950s, scientists found that when a minuscule amount of the botulinum toxin was injected into a muscle it made the muscle temporarily stop contracting without any side effects or complications. Thus, BOTOX was born.

In the decades that followed, BOTOX was used in this manner to stop involuntary muscle spasms, such as eyelid spasms. More recently the FDA has approved BOTOX to treat overactive sweat glands and migraine headaches.

But it was in 2002 when BOTOX became a household brand name. That was the year the FDA approved the use of BOTOX to treat wrinkles on the upper third of the face.

What Is BOTOX Best Used For?

Botox  is commonly used to treat your crow’s feet, eliminate the wrinkles between your eyebrows and soften the wrinkles in your forehead. Other areas we may treat are the chin, neck and “bunny lines” on the nose.

How Do I Choose Between BOTOX or Xeomin®?

How is BOTOX Administered?

BOTOX is injected with a very tiny needle, and most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick. Numbing cream isn’t usually requested, although it is available should you want it. A session takes just 15 minutes or so, making it a true “lunchtime procedure.”

How Many BOTOX Injections Are Needed For Best Results?

The number of individual injections in a session will depend on what you are having treated. But one session is all you need. From there, your results will last from 3 to 6 months before the body absorbs the now-inert botulinum toxin and your muscles start to contract again, again creating the wrinkles on the surface skin.

How Long Will Results of BOTOX Last?

Both of these neuromodulators provide results for 3 to 6 months.

BOTOX Aftercare

The important thing after you’ve had BOTOX injections is to not rub the injection sites for 4 hours. Doing so can make the BOTOX migrate to an unintended muscle.
Our initial cosmetic consultations are complimentary. We look forward to discussing your cosmetic options with you!

Are There Any Side Effects with BOTOX?

BOTOX has been injected millions of times around the world and has millions of satisfied patients, some who border on fandom! There have been few side effects with  Botox. Usually, the minor side effects are a slight pain, bruising, and swelling at the injection locations, but these pass in a day or so.

The main side effect with both BOTOX is an injection into an unintended muscle, creating a drooping eyelid, cockeyed eyebrows, and such. But thanks to the training and knowledge of the facial anatomy of Dr. Musick, this is not an issue for his patients.

Is There A Charge For My Cosmetic Consultation?

Our initial cosmetic consultations are complimentary. We look forward to discussing your cosmetic options with you!
