Did You Know That May is Melanoma Awareness Month?
With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent the damaging effects of UV rays. Avoid tanning beds. Seek the shade, especially between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. See your physician every year for a professional skin exam. Wear protective clothing such as a light weight long sleeved shirt, pants, a wide brimmed hat and sun glasses when possible. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
The darker side of tanning: Cumulative damage caused by UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging (wrinkles, lax skin, brown spots) and skin cancer. People who first use a tanning bed before the age of 35 increase their risk of melanoma by 75% and many states have banned the use of tanning beds by minors. Here are some common myths and facts about tanning.
Myth: I can’t wear sunscreen because it clogs my pores.
Fact: Our Skin Ceuticals sunscreens are non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic meaning that they are formulated to not block pores and do not contain harsh ingredients that could irritate skin. Even those with sensitive or acne prone skin can get great sun protection.
Myth: My makeup has an SPF so I’m protected.
Fact: While having an SPF in your foundation or powder is great it is best to have a base layer of sunscreen on your face, neck, upper chest, and ears as well. Most makeup does not have the staying power to last all day and by late afternoon you may not have the same protection you did when first applied.
What does SPF stand for? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. A sunscreen is a product that absorbs or reflects some of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation and helps protect against sunburn. Diligent use of sunscreen can also slow or temporarily prevent the development of wrinkles, moles and sagging skin. Understanding numbers: SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays while SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 blocks 98%.
Myth: I need to get a base tan before going on vacation.
Fact: Studies have found that a base tan fails to protect against sunburn and provides very minimal sun protection, which is equivalent to an SPF of about 3. Furthermore, you are only creating further damage by pre-tanning in a bed before hitting the beach.

Product Spotlight: SkinCeuticals Sunscreens
These products provide broad spectrum protection using 100% mineral ingredients for those with sensitive skin and/or post-procedure skin or chemical sunscreens for those who are active or experience extreme weather conditions. Their patented Z-COTE ingredient in the physical sunscreens is a zinc oxide that provides protection against damaging and aging UVA rays by reflecting the rays entirely while remaining transparent on the skin. These are our most popular options!
